Why we Love it

We would call this piece a true souvenir!

A hand embroidered shawl which has just left its birthplace- Kashmir - yet assembled all that it could from the paradisaical surroundings. Hosting motifs of scenic landscapes, the Dal Lake, the rich flora and fauna and some shikaras from the valley, a profusely hand embroidered and painted Kashmiri Kalamkari Pashmina shawl assembles the entire valley into its downy depths and makes the nostalgic patrons of art long to visit the valley once again.

The Exquisite Craftsmanship

The word Kalamkari is made up of two terms, 'Kalam' meaning 'Pen' and 'Kari' meaning 'work'. Hence the word Kalamkari literally translates to Pen work or brush work. Kalamkari work is one of the main traditional works of India and is represented in many art forms of the country even today such as heritage fibres and paintings. The exclusive characteristic for a Kalamkari shawl would definitely be the fine details and the careful mix of colours in this intricate hand drawn pen work.

Designing from Kalamkaar: When a Pashmina is chosen for Kalamkari, it has to be sent to a Kalamkar(a specialist of Kalamkari).

Selecting the Pen: The Kalamkar uses materials like bamboo or other wooden pens with flat nibs called Kalams, dips them in inks which is made from vegetable derived pigments, and creates marvellous designs all over the lush fabric.

Designs: Usually large paisleys are printed in a plethora of different colours are handpainted over the base, but other motifs are used as well.

Origin: Kalamkari Shawls are believed to originate from Northers states of India.

In Kashmir: It wasn't until the 18th century that Kalamkari was done over Kashmiri Pashmina shawls. What is special about Kashmiri Kalamkari work is that when done over a Pashmina shawl, it is later hand embroidered in multicoloured threads to make the motifs more prominent and beautiful.
